The 1979 January term documented by these pages took place a few months following the meetings at Camp David that preceded the Camp David Accords, entered into by Menachim Begin and Anwar Sadat (under the guidance of Jimmy Carter, with support by Yasser Arafat). It was a time of unprecendented optimism for peace. As a student on that trip, it is challenging to consider the pain that has re-emerged this year, 2002.

Note -- Abetting Professor Peterec on this January Semester were Bucknell professors Tom Travis (political science) and Walter Odronic (Japanese). As I recall, in Jerusalem, among many other turns, Tom presented a stimulating paper on how to demarcate Israeli and Palestinian factions for an enduring peace. Walter shared much insight on Eastern philosophy and ancient civilizations. |
